Coastal Grandmother. Similar to the Coastal Cowgirl is the Coastal Grandmother or Coastal Granddaughter aesthetic a little more youthful take on the aesthetic. Think Maratha Stewart meets Matilda Djerf. It’s preppy, but not really in an old money or tennis way. It’s very beachy and East Coast. Lots of breezy button downs, wide legged linen pants, sundresses. The color pallet is pastels, white, cream, and blues. There are lots of stripes and sometimes gingham as well. I love this aesthetic because it is really easy to thrift, but also because it is soooo comfortable. I have two pairs of linen pants and they are AMAZING!!!!
*This vintage Ralph Lauren American flag sweater is so cute, but a little too preppy for my personal style.
*The print on this top is to die for!
*Matilda Djerf the blue print.
Classic Country. Nothing beats the original. Classic country to me means tank tops, daisy dukes, and cowgirl boots, complete with hoop earrings and stacks of bangles, and a big buckle belt. This aesthetic is just so fun, whether you really are country or not. Whenever I think of it, I think about The Chicks, Shania Twain, and Jessica Simpson in “Dukes of Hazzard”. Bonus points if the jean pockets show through the cut offs and have blinged out pockets. So, put on some sultry makeup, fluff up your hair, and channel your inner Cindy Crawford in that one Pepsi commercial.
*No one can deny how fab Cindy Crawford was in this Pepsi Ad.
*The original Daisy Duke aka the ultimate country girl.
*This outfit is a mega slay.
Rockstar Girlfriend / Indie Sleaze. While this may not be limited to the summer, I think it is perfect for night time parties, music festivals, or raves. When I think of the rockstar girlfriend, I think of Sophie Thatcher as Natalie in “Yellowjackets,” Devon Lee Carlson, and Joan Jett. The rockstar girlfriend is full of denim, leather, and studs. The color pallet is much darker, and the makeup consists of thick eyeliner and a bold lip. If it’s cold a leather jacket does wonders or even a fur coat in the winter. Similar to rockstar girlfriend, Indie Sleaze or the Tumblr girl is one of the edgier aesthetics listed here. There really aren’t a ton of elements that are different than the rockstar girlfriend, but it may feel a bit tamer.
*Tara Yummy just cracks me up.
*The leather shorts are amazing but would probably make me sweat so bad.
*You gotta love Sophie Thatcher as Natalie in “Yellowjackets”.
*The queen herself, she doesn’t even need a rockstar boyfriend cause she is the rockstar.
*Blondie was equally fab.
*You’ve gotta love Juliette Lewis.
Coconut Girl. This emerged in, I believe, the summer of 2022? The coconut girl or sometimes called the island girl is all about bright colors, fun patterns, and beach themed wear. I think of it being similar to a beach barbie, Lisa Frank, or like Kelly Kapowski from “Saved by the Bell”.
*Love this it’s giving 2000’s Hawaiian vacation vibes.
*So cute!
*This is much more tame and casual than some of the coconut girl outfits, but I still absolutely love it!
Mermaid Core. Emerging last summer due to the live action “Little Mermaid” hitting theaters that summer, mermaid core focuses on a cool toned pallet, blues, greens, and purples. It makes use of excellent textures like fishnets, sequins, scales, and iridescent fabrics. It features sea creature motifs like shells, star fish, sea horses, and pearls. There’s lots of shine and the clothes almost glisten like water. Although it’s very beautiful, I do feel like it’s not very functional.
*This would be such a good going out top.
*This dress is stunning, from the Jenny Packham Ready To Wear Autumn 2007 (also my birth year!).
*Dua Lipa in a Bluemarine dress with starfish motifs and a bedazzled shell bra top.
Bohemian Rhapsody. I came up with this name myself and I must say I am very proud of it. This style just means classic bohemian, which is perfect for the summer. The clothes are light and airy and perfect for picnics, frolicking in flower fields, and rolling down hills. I think of it like summer Whimsy Goth and vice versa. I think of frills, paisley print, florals, rompers, and sundresses, along with puffy sleeve tops, crochet, vests, and denim dresses.
*An excellent hairstyle for the aesthetic modeled by YouTuber and influencer Marla Catherine.
*A beautiful crochet top with either embroidered jeans or a skirt modeled by a young Elizabeth Berkley.
*This skirt is excellent, also the girl in this photo looks so much like Julia Stiles as Kat Stratford in “10 Things I Hate About You”.
*This fringe dress is so fun and I love the other girl’s chain accessory.
Slasher Summer. UGHHHH I LOVE THIS AESTHETIC!!!!!!!! This has just recently emerged on TikTok and I am in love. As a horror movie fanatic, I just love it. There are nods to “Friday the 13th” and “I Know What You Did Last Summer”. It’s a very camp counselor vibe. T-shirts, tanks, denim cutoffs, those sport shorts with a stripe down the side, and keds. At night, I could see them layering a long sleeve crewneck or hoodie a top a tank top before going to the boys cabin. The color pallet is fairly open, but pretty bright think eye catching blood and cherry reds, golden hued yellows, and rich blues and greens. I think the thrift store would be excellent for finding pieces to match this aesthetic. I would look for vintage graphic tees, 90s basics, vintage jeans, adidas soccer shorts, and even soffee shorts.
*This is an excellent example of really leaning into the camp counselor aspect of the look.
*A bit more preppier of a take, you have to admire the stripes and collar, even if it’s not your thing.
*I’m not sure where this picture is from, but yes, this is perfect. The look, the hair, you know for a fact a scrunchie is holding that ponytail together, the oversized red t-shirt that could be her own or her boyfriend’s, she’s likely either in underwear, swimsuit bottoms, or very short shorts under it, I feel like short plaid pajama shorts would work perfectly, and the scrunched white socks. LOVE IT.
*A young Jennifer Love Hewitt as Julie James in “I Know What You Did Last Summer,” yeah, I know you slayed last summer. Also, that is such the facial expression/look of a final girl, the deep emotional eyes, the pouty lips, slightly knitted eyebrows. Ugh, *chefs kiss*.
*Mia Goth as final girl Maxine Minx in Ti West’s “X”. I have yet to watch “X”, but I have seen “Pearl”. This tube top is perfect for the look and she killed those overall shorts.
For all these looks and many more reasons, I am very, very excited for summer!!!!!
